Your Outdoor Wedding and Why Rain Might Be a Good Thing
Rain on your wedding day. What could be worse, huh? All those decorations, everyone all dressed up, makeup ruined, photo shoots have to change and everyone upset. But, is it really so bad? There is a tradition that says it is a good thing!
Wedding Day Rain Tradition
The old superstition of rain on your wedding day is that the rain will bring cleansing and fertility. So, if you are caught in a downpour then it is actually a good thing. Well, it is a good thing if you want to start having children right away!
The History of the Superstition
Nobody has been able to figure out where this rain on your wedding day idea first came into being, but it can be seen in Irish, Italian and Hindu cultures.
The Italians have a saying, "Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunate." This basically means, “Wet bride, lucky bride.” By some reports, the luck has mostly to do with a happy sex life and not money or financial luck.
The Hindu tradition hints at the rain making a long, happy marriage. Their wedding ceremony is literally tying the knot, as in with a piece of cord. So, a wet knot is a lot more difficult to undo, giving the couple the blessing of a long, happy marriage.
For the Irish, the saying is, “Happy is the bride that the sun shines on.” Another belief is that the amount of rain that falls on the wedding will be proportionate to the amount of tears the bride sheds in her marriage. Yikes, huh?
For Happy or For Sad
Rain on your wedding day can be a happy thing, cleansing the happy couple of the past and sprinkling fertility upon them. Or, it can be a dire warning of hard times to come. It all depends on how your family tradition looks at it, or how you want to look at it. But, if you have a big outdoor wedding planned, you might have a tent there, just in case!
