DANVILLE, Va. - When Ben David opened his jewelry store in a small downtown shop about 45 years ago, he never would have dreamed of opening a freestanding store on Mount Cross Road.

But his sons dreamed it, and by February, they will open it.

"Forty-five years ago ... I would have said, 'Why out in the country. Who the heck would want to put a jewelry store out in the country?'" Ben David, 83, said Tuesday at a ground-breaking ceremony for a new store between First State Bank and Wal-Mart.

"They taught (my brother) Leon and I how to talk to people, how to be people and how to provide our customers with the best service," Mark David said of his parents.

The next progression of Ben David Jewelers carried it to another downtown location before it became one of the first stores in the Ballou Park Shopping Center.

When Ben and Bec David opened their first store in 1959, the land on which the shopping center now stands was the home of the Danville Leafs minor league baseball team.

"Everybody went to the ball game. It was quite an event," Bec David said."We were one of the first to move into the new shopping center."

The jewelry store started another trend when it was one of the first tenants of Piedmont Mall in 1984.

Now, the jewelers will break new ground when they open the anchor store of a small shopping center in the now-developed area.

"Ben, isn't it great to build a business to give on to your sons?" Danville Mayor John Hamlin asked."Where else can you better build a jewelry store except next to a bank?"

Samet Corp. is the general contractor building the Ben David Jewelers Superstore & Shoppes at Mount Cross. The company told Mark and Leon David that the building should be completed by October, but the upfitting will last past Christmas.

That could work to Christmas shoppers' advantage. In order to avoid moving massive amounts of jewelry from the current store in Piedmont Mall to the new store, inventory reduction sales will be held.

"Coming up, as we get closer to the event, we're going to try to clean out a lot of our things," Mark David said."We're going to move over our computer system and one or two safes, and that's about it."

The old store's shelves and display cases will be sold along with the jewelry, but employees will be added when the new store opens.

Mark David thanked the store's customers, whom he called the"most loyal" people he could know.

"They trust us with their jewelry," he said."They bring us thousands of dollars of diamonds and hand them over without blinking an eye."

The interior of the superstore will reflect Leon David's home - all the interior design work is being done by his wife.
